Kitchen Tips: The Greenest Cleaner

Most kitchens contain enough chemicals of one kind or another to make buying commercial cleaning products unnecessary

The problem lies in remembering which does what and the quantities needed. Two of the most valuable compounds in this respect are citric acid and carbon dioxide which, handily enough, are the 'business' constituents of alka seltzer. And that makes these seltzer tablets very neat cleaning agents.

Two tablets left in the bottom of a glass vase (or any other glass container) with a cup of water will clean all those stains off the bottom. You can do the same with a wine decanter (leave the stopper off).

Does the thermos smell less than fresh after storage? Four tablets dropped into it and topped up with water will both clean and freshen. Do NOT put the top on while the cleaning is taking place though, or the object twirling gyroscopically in the night sky may well be you!

Seltzer tablets can also be broken into quarters, dropped down the kitchen sink and reinforced with a cup of white vinegar. This does wonders for a clogged and smelly drain.

You can try other things for yourself, without fear of doing any harm. The chemicals involved are safe to use in the quantities provided both to you, your family, the family pets and the environment.

In fact, alka seltzer comes close to being just about the greenest cleaner you can find.
