Kitchen Tips: Self Raising Flour Self raising flour, which may have a different name outside Australia, is simply plain (all-purpose) flour to which baking powder has been added. I mention this because there are still plenty of recipes appearing in food magazines that call for its use in baking. If you don't happen to have it in the store cupboard, you may be tempted to either pass up the recipe or spend money unnecessarily. You can make your own self-raising flour by adding 1 level tablespoon of baking powder to each 250g (approximately 8 ozs) of plain flour used. Mix it well and sieve it before using.
