Kitchen Tips: Removing Screw Top Lids When the screw top of a jar sticks, it's usually because a vacuum has been created between it and the contents, causing ordinary air pressure to hold it firmly in place. This can often be broken simply by tapping the lid sharply on opposite sides with a rolling pin or something similar. If this still fails to shift it, punch a small hole in the top. If there are still unused contents in the jar, you can simply cover the hole with a piece of sticky tape which will re-seal it. If it sticks again, you just remove the tape.
