Kitchen Tips: Onions Without Tears Onions make you cry when you prepare them because they release sprays of an oily irritant when you cut into them. This gets into your eyes, on your hands and even up your nose, which is why peeling them under water is one solution to the problem. I think this is pretty messy myself and in any case wastes water, which is an important consideration in Australia. My method is to put the onions in the freezer for about 20 minutes before I intend to use them. Very simple and I promise you very effective.
