Dealing With Adverse Comments
One of the more irksome aspects of contributing information to any forum or message board can be the facile comments added by those who believe they know better. This can be particularly irritating if you are an expert in your field and even more so when the remarks are anonymous and one has no right of reply. This has been highlighted recently by a couple of contributers who posted intel protesting their treatment by others. I think this happens to all of us to some extent. For example, as a professional chef I have been told that metal cannot be used in a microwave (untrue, it's a myth, I have a separate article on the subject), that my work is the work of someone else (the name quoted was my own!), and there have been any number of comments beginning "you should have....." As an aside, I have never fully understood why some people feel the need to go around 'shoulding' on everyone else. So what is the best way to personally handle this sort of thing without becoming angry, upset or despondent? I find the best thing is to view the display of ignorance as confirmation that there is a great deal of misinformation in popular belief and that I have a role to play in helping to change that, as do other contributors to this search engine. If the comment is based on ignorance, or even a little learning, it is of no consequence and can be safely ignored. Negativity is of no use to anyone. The mark down that often accompanies the adverse comment is also of little consequence, since all contributors are suffering to some extent from the same thing. I find that by deliberately taking a positive view I can not only avoid any kind of upset, I can actually laugh at some of the more puerile stuff. In his Essay on Criticism, Pope wrote that "a little learning is a dangerous thing...". I'm not certain I agree with that except in a few circumstances. Personally I have often found that a little learning more frequently results in a source of hilarity, and that the same thing applies to both adverse and favourable criticism. To sum up, how one reacts to one's critics is, I believe, a matter of perception. There will always be those who believe they are the final authority on just about everything. Whether they be for you or against, to take either camp of imposters seriously is, I believe, as pointless as it is counter-productive. So I ignore them. |
